The Syrian Civil War: A Decade of Destruction

When two fishes are fighting over a pond there must be a Britisher passed by it. The seeds of hostilities were started when the British left the colonized Syria and selected their successor Hafeez Al Assad who belonged to the Shia faction, he became leader despite Sunni majority country. Afterwards, the series of political unrest and outrage emerged with the influence of Assad. Many rebels and separatist groups started showing resistance and revolt against him calling him illegitimate and puppet. In order to quash rebels he launched chemical bombing and banned weapons on his enemies destroying half of the population of Syrians with the strong support from Russia.

Why was Russia supporting Assad’s regime?
Russia always shows interest in Syria because of the presence of natural gas reserves and oil abundance. Moreover, it is situated at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea which connects Europe to Asia. The strategic location of Syria draws the attention of Russians to hold cordial ties with Assad’s regime giving him support against imminent threats.

How did the Syrian conflict start?
It all started when corruption, unemployment, and injustice of government was becoming a nightmare for people. They became perturbed by Assad’s cruelty and despotism. Inflation was uncontrollably rising and crime rate was ceaselessly increasing making the lives of people miserable. Whereas, Assad was living an opulent and lavish life unconcerned by the afflictions of people. Hence, it spewed hatred and anger among people for him and ultimately revolt started which was later backed by rebels to topple the regime.

What are America and other proxies doing in Syria?
Ever since Syria exists it was blessed with multiple ethnic groups instead of seeing it as a blessing and economic opportunity. Their leaders mired this land with bloodshed where bombs and guns voices were heard every time in the vicinity. The presence of multiple factions creating nexus against each other to achieve control over Syria. It is a big problem because every time new groups emerge from nowhere fighting for their cause. ISIS is fighting for their own ideology, seeing American troops in Syria as a potential threat. Similarly, Turkish backed groups are promoting their own heroic version of interpretations to sway domination. Simultaneously, Russia is backing the established government of Assad who is ruling for fifty years. It is a never ending mess where every new group emerges for their ulterior motives in order to maintain supremacy. However, scapegoats are only the people of Syria who have faced horrors and darkest chapters of their life over the different passage of times.
